Maytag 3000 Washer Locked With Door Open

Run a drain and spin cycle.

The door may immediately unlock. The top panel will pull straight back up and off. This is a page about unlocking the door on a maytag front load washer. If not call for service.

Remove the lower kick panel. Carefully reach up along the inside of that front panel and pull down on the manual release tab that is on the bottom of the door latch assembly. The door will not immediately unlock while the cycle is running due to a possible high water level in the washer high water temperature tumbling or spinning. Reach up along the inside of the front and locate the bottom of the door switch lock unit.

Located on the bottom of the door switch lock unit is a teardrop shaped tab. Front loaders have a locking mechanism to avoid opening the door during a washing cycle but occasionally this lock will be activated accidentally. Inspect the door lock for damage. You will hear the door click when it unlocks.

Once the washer door is closed the washer can begin operating. After plugging the washer in one of the following 3 events will happen. Reconnect power to washer plug in. If the door lock is damaged or does not latch properly replace it.

If the washer will not unlock at the end of a wash cycle unplug the washer or disconnect power. The door should unlock after 60 seconds. Remove the screws coming in from the back of the top panel.

If there is no motor humming pull the washer forward and unplug it. Unplug washer or disconnect power. You should then be able to open the washer door. For that new maytag washer that you have you will need to unplug the washer and remove the bottom front service panel as shown in the image below. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. The door should unlock after this is complete. If the door lock is defective the washer door will not latch properly.

Wait approximately 2 minutes for control to reset. After 15 minutes it will reset and the motor will stop humming and the door will unlock.
